Union Minister to visit Kottayam, Idukki

Mani Shankar Aiyer will visit grama panchayats

KOTTAYAM: Mani Shankar Aiyer, Union Minister for Panchayati Raj, Youth Affairs and Sports, will pay an official visit to the State this week.

According to a press note, Mr. Aiyer will be in Kerala to have a hands-on experience of the functioning of the Panchayati Raj system.

The Minister is expected to visit Kottayam, Idukki, Alappuzha and Thiruvananathpuram districts and interact with elected representatives and officials.

Mr. Aiyer, who is to arrive in Kochi on Wednesday, will visit Kanjikkuzhi (Alappuzha) panchayat on Thursday, the press note said. He will also visit Kumarakom (Kottayam) panchayat and then proceed to Munnar in the evening.

Mr. Aiyer will visit Santhanpara grama panchayat (Idukki) on Friday morning and later convene a meeting with elected representatives and senior officials at Devikulam.

The Minister is expected to visit Peerumade grama panchayat in the afternoon before returning to Kottayam.

Interactions with the Kottayam district panchayat will be held in the evening on the same day. The Minister is expected to visit Venganoor and Karakulam panchayats in Thiruvananthapuram district before his scheduled meeting with Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan the same day, according to the press note.

Thomas Kunnappally, Kottayam district panchayat president, said a special session of the council has been scheduled for the day. Projects such as the Clean Meenachil Project, National Dalit Research Centre in memory of the former President K.R. Narayanan and a programme to provide shelter to the Dalit population of the district, all envisaged by the district panchayat, will be taken up with the Minister, he said.
