Ceasefire only if ULFA agrees for talks: Army

Special Correspondent

"Create awareness against acts of terror"

  • ULFA recently rejected talks offer
  • "A practice of the outfit to disown any such involvement"

KOLKATA: The Army will not suspend its operations against the United Liberation Force of Asom (ULFA) until the latter sits for direct talks with the Government, Lt. Gen. Arvind Sharma, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief , Eastern Command, said here on Monday.

"We are not ruling out ceasefire but the condition is that the ULFA has direct talks with the Government," he said.

The ULFA leadership recently rejected an offer from the Assam Government to sit down for direct talks unless the Army suspends its operations against it.

Referring to the denial of involvement by the ULFA in the recent violence in Assam, he said it had become "a practice of the outfit to disown any such involvement."

On the recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai and Srinagar, Lt. Gen. Sharma said there was need for the creation of a strong public awareness against such activities.

On infiltration of terrorists from across the borders, he said border vigil was the responsibility of the Border Security Force. The Army had been sharing with various agencies as well as State Governments whatever information it gets, he said.
