CHENNAI: With major reservoirs in Karnataka full, the Stanley reservoir in Mettur is likely to receive copious inflow this week. The combined storage of four major reservoirs in Karnataka, the major source of supply for the Stanley Reservoir, is 112 tmcft as against their capacity of 114 tmcft. While Kabini, Herangi and Hemavathi reservoirs in Karnataka have almost reached their full capacity, the Krishnaraja Sagar Reservoir (KRS) is just 0.5 tmcft short of its capacity of 49.5 tmcft. At present the entire inflow of about 15,000 cusecs from the Kabini dam is being released in the river. This will reach the Mettur reservoir.
Surplus flow
The surplus flow from Herangi and Hemavathi reservoirs will feed the KRS reservoir. The total inflow is 18,000 cusecs. With the current inflow, the reservoir may reach its full capacity of 49.5 tmcft in two days. Once the reservoir reaches its capacity, the entire inflow from the KRS will be released. Already, as a precautionary measure, Karnataka authorities are discharging 5,700 cusecs in the Cauvery and another 3,200 cusecs in canals. So the Mettur reservoir is likely to get an inflow of over 30,000 cusecs within the next two days. On Monday, the reservoir received an inflow of 24,200 cusecs and the discharge was being maintained at 18,000 cusecs for kuruvai cultivation. Monday's storage in the reservoir was 69.373 tmcft as against its capacity of 93.4 tmcft. Officials here said with the present level of storage and inflow into the reservoir, there would be no difficulty in ensuring water supply for delta irrigation both for the current short-term kuruvai and the long-term samba crop.
