CAUGHT IN A STORM: Congress corporators preventing Mayor M.S. Chakravarthi from leaving the council hall after he adjourned the meeting in Rajahmundry on Monday. - Photo: S. Rambabu
Rajahmundry: The Rajahmundry Municipal Corporation witnessed noisy scenes on Monday over the Joint Collector's enquiry report on the alleged corrupt practices of Mayor M.S. Chakravarti. The Congress, led by MLA and ex-officio member R. Suryaprakasha Rao, demanded that the Mayor step out of the Chair to pave the way for smooth discussion on the report. When the Mayor agreed, TDP members came to his support and urged him not to bow to pressure. They contended that action, if any, should be taken by the government and not the council. When the Mayor adjourned the meeting, Congress corporators tried to block his passage and raised slogans against him.
Chikungunya
The council meeting began with a discussion on chikungunya, which was spreading fast in the corporation limits. Members stalled the proceedings for a few minutes and lashed out at Municipal Health Officer Rajendra Prasad for alleged dereliction of duty. Meanwhile, Telugu Desam member Z. Jayadev, floor leader V. Rambabu and a few woman members asked the Chair to take up ward issues that had been pending for last six months. However, a majority of Congress members sought a discussion on the enquiry report. Mr. Suryaprakasha Rao and members - S. Sivarama Subrahmanyam, Harinadula Prasad and Pantam Kondala Rao -- demanded that the Mayor step out of the Chair to enable a discussion on the report. When the Mayor readily agreed and proposed a senior member Ranganayakulu as panel Mayor to run the proceedings, Congress members welcomed the gesture. But, TDP Corporators did not allow him to do so. Mr. Chakravarti then adjourned the meeting. This provoked Congress members who staged a dharna for more than an hour in front of the standing committee hall, where the Mayor had a meeting with TDP members.
