PATHANAMTHITTA: People's Democratic Party acting chairman Poonthura Siraj has said that the recently enacted professional colleges Act is a welcome gesture in ensuring social justice. Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Mr. Siraj also urged the Government to take steps to remove the apprehensions, if any, of the minority communities over certain clauses in the Act. The PDP leader said former Chief MinisterA.K. Antonyshould clarify his stand on the Act without any delay. Education Minister M.A. Baby had held talks with Mr. Antony at the latter's residence before introducing the Bill in the Assembly, Mr. Siraj said. It was sheer disregard for the Legislature on part of the United Democratic Front (UDF) to oppose the Act after supporting it in the Assembly, he alleged. "The Kerala Students Union should have better staged a protest march to Mr. Antony's residence, instead of marching to the Minister's bungalow," Mr. Siraj said. Mr. Siraj said the State leadership meeting of the PDP would be held at the Aban Arcade in Pathanamthitta on July 26 and 27. Ministers and prominent political leaders would address the two-day meeting, he added.
