KOLLAM: The Pastoral Council of the Kollam Diocese has registered its protest against the alleged attempts by the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government to portray the Latin Catholic community as "education traders." A meeting of the council on Sunday said the community had played a crucial role in educational and social progress of modern Kerala. The meeting said the Kerala Professional Colleges (Prohibition of Capitation fees, Regulation of admissions, fixation of Non Exploitative Fees and Other Measures to Ensure Equity of Excellence in Professional Education) Act 2006 denied the rights of the minorities guaranteed under Article 30(1) of the Constitution. The Act also violated the 93rd Amendment of the Constitution. If the Act comes into force, then no institution run by the Catholic community would get the protection guaranteed by the Constitution, the council said. It said the Latin Catholic community, which was still educationally and socially backward, would be the worst hit. The Act did not give any kind of protection to the Latin Catholic community or other backward communities, the council meeting said. Kollam Bishop Stanley Roman presided over the meeting. Council leaders Romance Antony, Silvie Antony, P. Justin and J. Jacob addressed the meeting.
