VIJAYAWADA : Several candidates who filed nominations, or are in the process of doing so, for the forthcoming elections to the posts of sarpanches and ward members in villages participated in a one-day training programme organised by the Krishna district unit of Lok Satta at Gudivada on Sunday. The programme was organised as part of Praja Rajyam campaign to promote a new culture in politics. Lok Satta's district president G. Vijayam, who inaugurated the workshop, said the success of democracy at the grassroots level depended on the active participation of people in elections. It was only when large numbers participates that the cleansing of the electoral process could happen, he observed. All the participants in the programme took a pledge against distributing money and liquor and resorting to any illegal or unethical practices to win. The pledge included what they would do to their village and people in case they won the election.
