Manipur routs Tamil Nadu

Chandigarh: Y. Kamala Devi netted five goals as defending champion Manipur routed Tamil Nadu 7-0 in its opening Group I quarterfinal league match of the third junior girls under-17 National football championship here on Monday. M. Montesori Chanu and M. Mandakini Devi netted one goal each for the winners.

Meanwhile, a last-minute goal by Gurpreet Kaur helped Punjab snatch a point from Haryana in another Group I quarterfinal fixture. The match ended in a 1-1 draw. Haryana striker Diksha put her team ahead by converting a cross from the left in the 47th minute after a barren first-half.

In a sudden counter-attack, Gurpreet got the equaliser for Punjab in the 79th minute with a solo effort.

Kamala opened the account for Manipur in the 30th minute, while Mandakini netted the second goal for the winners in the 39th minute. Then it was Kamala all the way as she scored thrice in the 40th, 47th and 60th minutes to complete her hat-trick.

Kamala netted her fifth goal in the 67th minute and Montesori Chanu completed the tally in the 65th minute. — UNI
