CHENNAI : The first phase of counselling for admission to MBBS/BDS courses in Tamil Nadu medical colleges for 2006 concluded on Monday with all the 1,545 seats being allotted. Counselling began on July 10 and 1,972 candidates were invited to attend a participative process that ended in allotment of seat in any government medical college. Of the 1,545 seats available this year, 1,458 were in the MBBS category in government colleges, 51 in government dental colleges and 36 seats were surrendered to the Government quota from the IRT, Perunthurai. The counselling sessions first covered candidates from special categories and then the general category, BC and MBCs, followed by SC and ST. Students were called in the order of merit and allotted seats by the rule of reservation (OC - 31 %, BC - 30 %, MBC - 20 %, SC - 18 % and ST - 1 %). Of the 1,972 candidates called for the counselling, nearly 95 per cent turned up, Directorate of Medical Education sources said.
Second phase
The second phase of counselling will be scheduled after August 20, the sources added, to fill vacancies caused by students not taking seats allotted to them and seats in the All India quota surrendered back to the State. Allocation will be on the basis of the order of merit and rule of reservation.
