ERODE: Four thousand five hundred bags of LRA, Surabi and MCU5 variety cotton grown in Bhavani and its surrounding areas were brought on Monday to the Anthiyur Regulated market for auction. Farmers expecting a heavy price waited for the tender. Buyers from Coimbatore, Salem and other areas placed tender for Rs 29.30 per kg. This is Rs 5.65 per kg more than last week's price. Last week the cotton was sold at Rs 23.65 per kg.

Last week the farmers, complaining that the buyers had formed a `syndicate' with the help of some influential persons, placed tender for less than Rs 23 per kilogram.

The farmers refused to sell the product and raised their objection. Officials of the regulated market held discussions with the farmers and solved the issue. The cotton was sold at Rs 23.65 per kilo last week. But the farmers said the present rate of Rs 29.30 per kilogram is also low and again the buyers formed a syndicate. But the buyers said they were fixing the rate based on the `staple' of the cotton. They said at present they required a limited quantity of cotton. They would buy heavy cotton in Bhoodapady Regulated Market where the quality of cotton is higher than the Anthiyur cotton. They also said usually they were patronising the farmers those who are bringing their cotton to the Regulated Market.

The Anthiyur Regulated Market, which is one of the viable markets, sells coconut, copra and gingelly too. The officials said today more than 50,000 coconuts arrived in the regulated market and they were sold at Rs 2 to Rs 5.20 per coconut.

Similarly, 250 bags of copra, each weighing 50 kg, arrived and were sold at Rs 29.37 per kg. About 175 bags of gingelly were sold at Rs 30 a kg and 45 bags of black gingelly were sold at Rs 21 to Rs 22 per kg.
