DEHRA DUN: The Dehra Dun Municipal Corporation will organise a conference of mayors of major cities of Asia later this year. Announcing this here, Manorama Sharma, chairperson of the All-India Council of Mayors, said that Sri Lankan president Mahindra Rajpakse and Congress president Sonia Gandhi have given their assent to participate in the conference. The mayors and urban development experts will try to find answers for planned development of cities under heavy population pressure, Ms. Sharma said. The Uttaranchal Government has agreed to give Rs.1 crore for the event. The idea of holding such a conference at State expense has been opposed by local Councillors and MLAs.
