CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Government has decided to constitute a Consumer Welfare Fund of Rs. 50 lakhs for the advantage of consumers besides raising the competency level of the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in granting compensation to aggrieved consumers, Deputy Chief Minister Chander Mohan announced here on Monday. Presiding over a meeting of the State-level Consumer Protection Council here, he said the Government had raised the competency of the Consumer Commission to grant compensation from Rs. 20 lakhs to Rs. 1 crore at the State level and up to Rs. 20 lakhs at the district level. He disclosed that consumer clubs had been formed in 135 schools of the region. A financial assistance of Rs 10,000 would be given to schools in which more than 50 children can become members of these clubs and participate in awareness campaigns. He urged the managing committees of private schools to set up similar consumer clubs in their schools as creation of awareness about consumer protection among school-going children would have a direct impact on their families.
