New Delhi: Prominent rivers in Uttar Pradesh were slowly rising on Monday following rains. At Bahraich in the State, land erosion by the Ghagra has affected normal life, and several villages are marooned.

In the last 24 hours, Varanasi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Faizabad, Moradabad and Bareilly divisions received medium rainfall. Gonda district received the maximum rainfall at 6 mm, followed by Dabri (Shahjahanpur) 4 mm, Kanpur 3 mm, Rae Bareli 2 mm and Bahraich 2 mm. Light rains in national Capital brought a sigh of relief on the faces of the people after a brief lull following the arrival of the South West Monsoon here last Sunday. In the Capital the rain lasted for a brief while and about 0.7 mm of rainfall was recorded till 2.30 p.m. The coming week could bring more rains to Delhi with the weathermen forecasting an increase in rainfall activity in North West India during the next few days. The low pressure area over Jharkhand and adjoining north Orissa which led to fairly widespread rains over Jharkhand, Orissa, Chhattisgarh and East Madhya Pradesh in the last few days, is likely to move in a west-northwesterly direction in the next few days.

The rainfall activity over Jharkhand and Orissa is likely to decrease after 24 hours, it could increase in East Rajasthan and areas of Northwest India, including Delhi. Parts of Himachal Pradesh went dry, and certain areas in Kullu, Bilaspur Mandi and Kinnaur districts experienced rain. However, rain eluded Shimla which remained draped in monsoon clouds during the day.

In Kolkata, the heavy downpour caused much harassment as there was waterlogging in almost all parts of the city. However, the humidity level has increased with relative humidity recorded at a maximum of 97 per cent. The monsoon is quite active in the State and it would rain regularly in the coming days.

The southwest monsoon has been active in Orissa and east Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh since Sunday. Heavy to very heavy rains have occurred at many places in Orissa. Very light rains have occurred at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu. Chandigarh: The monsoon activity may revive in North India over the next few days and the region can expect some rains, the Meteorological Department said. After hitting the region earlier this month, the monsoon has gone into ``weak phase'', but there are multiple weather systems and a low pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal which may help the monsoon activity to revive, Director of the Met Department Chattar Singh said here. He said that monsoon was currently passing over Anoopgarh and Churu in Rajasthan, Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh and then south eastwards to North Bay of Bengal.

``We also have a western disturbance over north Pakistan and neighbourhood as an Upper Air Cyclonic Circulation. An UACC also lies over north Rajasthan and adjoining west Haryana and south west Punjab. One more Cyclonic Circulation lies over west UP and neighbourhood,'' he said. Mr. Singh said rains or thunder showers were likely to occur at many places in Himachal Pradesh and at a few places in Punjab and Haryana over the next two days. - UNI, PTI
