NEW DELHI: The Leader of the Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Subhash Arya, on Monday accused the civic body administration of having failed miserably in property tax collection this year mainly because of the laxity of its Assessment and Collection Department officials. "In its own survey conducted recently to find out dangerous buildings across the city, the civic body teams inspected 17.51-lakh buildings. But during the drive to collect property tax, the department managed to target only around seven-lakh property owners in 2005-06, collecting Rs.486.46 crores. This clearly indicates that the MCD field staff has failed to increase its tax net over the past couple of years," said Mr. Arya.
Criticising the Assessment and Collection Department and political leadership in the civic body for failing to increase number of properties resulting in
"Since the Unit Area Method for property tax was introduced two years ago, collections have declined. In 2004-05, Rs.575.76 crores was collected that went down to 486.46 crores in 2005-06," he pointed out.
