Man ends life at Collectorate

ONGOLE: Lakshminarayana belonging to the Boya caste, who was allegedly harassed by revenue and police officials to vacate his house, committed suicide by consuming pesticide at the Collectors office during grievances day on Monday. Lakshminarayana consumed pesticide and stood in the queue for giving representation to the Collector. He was rushed to hospital where he died two hours later. - Special Correspondent

Court order on transfer

HYDERABAD: A Division Bench of Andhra Pradesh High Court expressed its opinion that the present Director General of Fire Services, Alok Srivastav may not be shifted from his present place of posting without informing the court. The Bench indicated this while hearing a writ petition regarding the safety of the buildings in the city vis-à-vis the standards prescribed by the Fire Services Department. The Bench refused to grant relaxation for deviations sought by a hotel complex in Hamayathnagar. - Legal Correspondent

New Chief Operations Manager for SCR

HYDERABAD: J.N. Jagannath, Vijayawada Divisional Railway Manager, on Monday took over as Chief Operations Manager of South Central Railways here. Mr. Jagannath, who belongs to 1976 batch of the Indian Railway Traffic Service, has worked in various capacities in the Railway and in the Traffic Directorate in Delhi. - Special Correspondent

Naxalite killed

WARANGAL: A naxalite belonging to CPUSI group died in an exchange of fire with the police near Mangapet in the wee hours of Monday. The deceased has been identified as Renikunta Ravi alias Rajaram alias Bhagat. He was CPUSI Eturunagaram zonal committee secretary and was charged with several counts of extortion. - Staff Reporter

Orders to pay salaries

HYDERABAD: The Director of School Education has issued orders that salaries of 2,231 mandal resource persons be drawn under the head of the school assistants posts lying vacant in Government, Mandal Parishad and Zilla Parishad schools. However, the order would not apply to East and West Godavari, Krishna and Hyderabad districts whose MRPs will get salaries from Sarva Sikha Abhiyan funds. - Special Correspondent

Hacked to death

Srikakulam: Balaga Kantha Rao (40) of Padali village near Heermandalam was allegedly hacked to death by his elder brother Balaga Raja Rao in the early hours of Monday. In a related incident Balaga Sayamma (30), wife of Savarayya, also of Padali village, committed suicide on hearing of Kanta Rao's death. - Special Correspondent

Geriatric clinic

TIRUPATI : SVIMS Superspecialty Hospital is holding a geriatric clinic on every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at the medicine department situated in Sri Padmavathi OPD Block for the benefit of the aged. Physiotherapy centre for the poor

TIRUPATI: Jana Seva Charitable Trust has started a physiotherapy and rehabilitation camp at New Balaji Colony in M.R.Palle here on Monday, exclusively for the benefit of the poor. An assistant professor in orthopaedics B. Sukumar inaugurated the camp. Reputed medical experts would be roped in to treat patients free of cost at the camp. Also, the trust secretary A. Falls to death from train

ONGOLE : A government employee died after falling down accidentally while trying to board a running train at Chinnaganjam railway station in Prakasam district today, it is reported. Railway officials drew flak for the delay in providing him with medical help.

Rajendra Prasad (40) working as senior assistant in Mandal Development Office at Chinnaganjam was a regular commuter to Ongole. As he came to the station at Chinnaganjam at 3.30 pm, he found the Secunderabad-Tirupati Krishna Express leaving the station. He tried to board the running train but fell down accidentally. Passengers pulled the chain and brought the train to a halt to their dismay found that he had lost his leg. After he was carried to the platform, Rajendra Prasad was later shifted to the guards' cabin. Railway officials held up the train for 15-20 minutes to lodge a complaint with police. When the Krishna Express finally reached Ongole after 80 minutes, Rajendra Prasad had breathed his last.-Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA: Bangalore-based HCL Technologies Limited, in a campus recruitment conducted at Koneru Lakshmaiah College of Engineering on July 15 and 16, selected 44 final year B.Tech students. The selected students were from ECE, CSE, IST, EEE, ECM, MCA and M.Tech branches. College chairman K. Satyanarayana, principal L.S.S. Reddy and Dean (placement cell) Y. Purandar, complimented the selected students for their success.

Siddhartha College gets more courses, seats

Also, the college got an approval for additional intake of 60 more students for CSE and 30 students for ECE, while the number for mechanical engineering fell from 60 to 30, a release said. Health camp for drivers

ANANTAPUR: The Transport Department, in association with Indian Medical Association, conducted a free health camp for drivers on the premises of RTA office here on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, Joint Secretary of Transport Madhusudhan Reddy suggested the drivers to take care of their eyesight. He asked them to go for eye check-up every three months, as most of the accidents occur due to sight problems and error in judgment. Staff Reporter

Held with naphtha

Kakinada: The Vigilance and Enforcement Department squad intercepted a tanker near Thetagunta check-post on the outskirts of Tuni on Sunday and seized 12,000 litres of naphtha being transported illegally to Gajuwaka on fake bills.
