Sarpanches' election: 10,600 voters to miss their franchise

Special Correspondent

Notification released before electoral staff could process claims for enrolment

  • No enumeration possible after notification is released
  • 20,77,749 voters to elect 1,333 sarpanches
  • Voter list similar as that taken for local bodies elections

TIRUPATI: Disappointment stares in the face of some 10,600 voters in Chittoor district who sought enumeration into the voter list to exercise their franchise at least in the ensuing election of sarpanches. They will have to miss this election too, if reports in the official circles are to be believed.

The reason is reported to be the release of notification for the election on July 9, even before the concerned electoral staff could process the claims made by the voters seeking enrolment.

In fact, some 10,600 voters in the district were said to have put in their claims between July 4 and 7, even as others were waiting for the process to resume on July 10 when the concerned offices reopened after remaining closed on July 8 and 9 for second Saturday and Sunday. But, reports indicate that with the Government releasing the election notification on July 9, chances of `missing voters' getting their names enrolled became remote. No enumeration is possible after the notification is released.

    1,333 posts

As many as 20,77,749 voters would be exercising their franchise during the elections to be held in the district for 1,333 posts of sarpanches spread over its three revenue divisions based at Tirupati, Chittoor and Madanapalle. This excludes the 47 panchayats where elections would not be held for some reason or the other. The voter list is the same as the one taken as the basis for the local bodies elections.

The elections would be held in the district in three instalments from July 29 and 12,722 polling stations are being set up, 6,918 ballot boxes readied and 14.61 lakh ballot papers printed.
