New seating arrangement flayed

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Former Chief Minister and general secretary of the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Jayalalithaa, on Monday criticised the new seating arrangement being made in the Assembly.

In a statement here, she said the new arrangement would give the go-by to conventions and precedents of the Assembly that were respected even more than the Rules of the House.

According to the erstwhile arrangement, the Leader of the Opposition was seated just in front of the Chief Minister.

Ministers would be seated in rows adjacent to the Chief Minister's seat and other leaders of Opposition parties would be earmarked seats along with the Leader of the Opposition, she said.

As per the new seating arrangement, a section of the Opposition members would not be in the view of the Chief Minister and the Treasury Benches while the Leader of the Opposition and a section of the Opposition members would be out of sight of the ruling party members, she said.

Ms. Jayalalithaa demanded that the original seating arrangement be restored.
