A PLEA: Lakshman Rao Morae, president of Shantinagar Playground Ulisi Horata Samiti, handing over a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner M. Maheshwara Rao in Mangalore on Monday.
MANGALORE: The Shantinagar Kreedangana Ulisi Horata Samiti on Monday appealed to the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada M. Maheshwara Rao to save the Shantinagar playground from being given to the Mangalore Electric Supply Company (MESCOM). The memorandum said the Shantinagar playground was the only open space available to the youth in the southern part of the city to practice sports and it should be saved from being taken over for housing government buildings. President of the Samithi Lakshman Rao Morae told presspersons that the Deputy Commissioner had given a patient hearing to the delegation and had even called up MESCOM Executive Engineer Venugopal asking him to make a spot inspection and examine the options available to MESCOM. Mr. Morae, while thanking the Deputy Commissioner, said according to some people, the playground was being used for sports for the last 100 years. Areas such as Kankanady, Valencia, Sooterpet, Jeppu, Mangaladevi, Attavar and Babugudda had no playground and youth from there used the Shantinagar playground . Mr. Morae said following the request of the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Venugopal had conducted a spot inspection and would report to the managing director of MESCOM regarding the issue. The delegation comprised youth leaders including U.T. Khader, T.K. Sudhir, P.V. Mohan, Yogish Shetty and others.
