Bangalore: As a mark of growing trade between India and China, the Chinese Consulate organised a meeting on Monday to promote the China International Silk Fair 2006. The fair will be held from October 26 to 30 at Hangzhou, one of the centres of modern silk industries in China.

"The export-oriented power loom industry in India needs a particular grade of silk. Right now, it is being imported from China. We are trying to meet the demand by raising the quality of our silk," Arvind Jennu, Secretary, Department of Sericulture said. Even though India is the second largest producer of silk, its quality lags behind China, he said.

Highlighting the increase in trade between the two countries, Darong Zhu, Economic and Commercial Consul of the Chinese Consulate in India, said the volume of bilateral trade was about $9 billion, and was expected to reach some $20 billion. India had invested about $120 million in projects in China while the latter had invested $726 million in projects in India, he said.

T.B. Maruthi, vice-chairman of the India Silk Export Promotion Council, said India could learn a lot about printing, processing and finishing of silk from China. The technology in China could be easily used in India as both countries had tropical climate, he said.

Mr. Maruthi said China exported about 500 times more than India and the quality of the silk fabrics were better than those manufactured in Italy and France.
