Security tightened at Mysore Palace

    MYSORE: Security has been tightened at the Mysore Palace in view of the alert sounded across the State in the wake of the recent serial blasts in Mumbai.

    Police personnel armed with sten guns have been posted at vantage locations on the palace premises and tourists are being frisked.

    Visitors, who were allowed to enter through different gates, will now have to enter only through the South Gate, also known as Varaha Gate. Each visitor will have to pass through a metal detector before he or she is subjected to frisking.

    The palace security guards, who were earlier armed with ordinary rifles, are now sporting Sten guns.

    The city police have reportedly sought sophisticated weaponry for security personnel in Mysore in view of the threat.

    The Government has provided seven sten guns to the city police and the security guards posted at Mysore Palace underwent a three-day training in operation of the sophisticated weapon, according to the police.

    The decision to enhance security was taken after the police authorities suspected a specific threat to the palace in the wake of the Mumbai blasts.

    The police and security personnel continue to remain in a state of alert at Mysore Railway station and the suburban bus stand.The City Police Commissioner Pravin Sood visited the Mysore Palace on Monday and reviewed the security arrangements.
