HYDERABAD: Concerned about the impact of the prolonged dry spell on farm operations, the Andhra Pradesh Government is preparing an agricultural contingency plan to suggest alternative crops like castor, redgram, jowar and soybean to farmers to overcome the impending crisis. It has positioned adequate stocks of seeds of all these irrigated dry crops. The Government wants to announce the plan after monitoring the situation till July 20. Officials have not given up hope since kharif paddy can be sown till the end of July. Continuance of the dry spell will upset the Government's ambitious plan to cover 84 lakh ha this year as against the normal of 72 lakh ha. Crops are withering belying earlier expectations of a good southwest monsoon that entered the State in advance.
