Hostel staff assaulted in burglary attempt

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: An employee of a working women's hostel at Vyttila was seriously injured when an intruder snatched her gold chain after breaking into the hostel premises on Monday morning.

The victim, Ratnamma from Kottayam, a mess staff at the Athurashramam Working Women's Hostel and Day Care Centre, had to put 26 stitches on her cheek at a private hospital, where she was recuperating.

According to the Panangad police, the intruder in an attempt to burgle had forced open the kitchen door before entering the work area.

He had also bent one of the grills of a window from the kitchen area to a courtyard where the rooms were located.

City Police Commissioner P. Vijayan has said that this was a different case as it was a single-man operation. The situation is not alarming, he said.

Ratnamma, who came to the kitchen to start her work, was taken in for a shock when an intruder sprang up to her and snatched her gold chain.

However, she quickly resisted the attempt with force and loud cries, which resulted in an attack with knife.

Circle Inspector T.S. Joseph, in charge of the Panangad station, said that finger prints were taken from the site and scientific experts and a dog squad had also visited the place. "Inquiry is going on with rounding up of the know criminals in the area," Mr. Joseph said.
