Thiruvananthapuram: A four- day workshop on `Conservation of Cycads in India' began here on Monday with a call to scientists to take up research on the development of neutraceutical products from the species. Inaugurating the workshop, the Executive Vice-President of the State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, A.E. Muthunayagam said the use of cycads as food by tribal communities in the past, indicated its potential for the development of modern food supplements. Botanical Survey of India Director M. Sanjappa highlighted the need for more research on cycads. Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute Director S.Ganeshan and R.Muniappan from the University of Guam were among those present at the inaugural function. Researchers and scientists from Australia, the U.S. Japan and China are participating in the workshop.
