Medicos' plea

Thiruvananthapuram: The Post Graduates' Association, Medical College has demanded that the State Government take the initiative to resolve the confusion regarding the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) status for the Medical College. The Central aid promised now and the proposals drawn up accordingly are hardly enough to raise the MCH, which treats over eight lakh patients every year, to the level of a national institution. Improvement of treatment facilities and upgrading teaching and research activities are crucial for this. - Staff Reporter

Open discussion

Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Medical Association's city branch is organising an open discussion on securing the AIIMS status for Thiruvananthapuram Medical College on Tuesday at the IMA Hall. Food and Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran will inaugurate the debate.

Fire in Secretariat

Thiruvananthapuram: Men from the Fire and Rescue Services on Monday put out a minor fire that broke out inside the `Sandwich Block' of the Government Secretariat on Monday morning. According to Fire Services Department officials, the fire broke out at the Housekeeping Department around 8 a.m. The fire had spread from the overheated motor of a pedestal fan. Secretariat staff had failed to switch it off before the office closed on Saturday evening. A cushioned chair, a table and a cupboard were damaged in the fire. - Staff Reporter

Youth arrested

Thiruvananthapuram: A 24-year-old man identified as Santhosh was arrested by the police late on Sunday night on charge of possessing brown sugar. According to the police, Santhosh who was standing by the side of the national highway bypass on Sunday night acted suspiciously and threw away a packet he had with him on seeing the car carrying the IG South Zone Arun Kumar Sinha. On being alerted by the IG about this incident, Circle Inspector Mohammed Iqbal and Sub-Inspector Prasad rushed to the spot and arrested Santhosh.
