NEW DELHI: The power situation in the Capital remained grim on Monday with several parts of the city witnessing long unscheduled power cuts. For the second consecutive day, 300 MW of load-shedding was resorted to as Delhi Transco failed to meet the increased demand for electricity. The peak demand for power on Monday shot up to 3,359 MW, while supply remained at around 3,000 MW. Apart from a fall in generation in some units, low frequency in the Northern Grid also complicated the situation during the day. "The private discoms were asked to do hourly rotational load-shedding as the frequency in the Northern Grid Load Despatch Centre remained unstable," said a senior official of the State Power Department. Apart from non-availability of about 50 MW power from the 500 MW Singrauli power station in U.P., one unit each at Raj Ghat and Indraprastha station are not functioning. Similarly, a 210 MW unit at Badarpur thermal power station has been shut for maintenance and will start operating only in mid-August. However, Delhi continued to get 300 MW of the 1,500 MW generated by Nathpa Jhakri. Another additional supply of around 15 MW is being received from one of the 140 MW units at Tehri hydroelectricity plant in Uttaranchal that started generation on Monday. Power supply situation remained poor in several trans-Yamuna, Outer Delhi, North and South Delhi areas where people complained about long power cuts. In East Delhi, load-shedding for two to six hours was done.
