`Notorious criminal' arrested
Thirty-five-year-old Santerpal, wanted in connection with the double murder case at Hapur in which Rashtriya Lok Dal party leader Virender Tyagi and Mukesh Tyagi were killed, carried a reward of Rs.2,500 on his head. Following a tip-off that Santerpal was trying to set up base in the Capital to carry out his criminal activities and would come near Gurdwara Majnu Ka Tilla over the weekend, the Special Cell laid a trap and arrested him when he appeared on the scene. A loaded country-made pistol was reportedly recovered from his possession. During interrogation, Santerpal revealed that he started his career in crime at the age of 18 when in 1989 he and his uncle killed a villager over a property dispute. In 1992, Santerpal was arrested under the Arms Act when he was found in possession of an illegal weapon. In 1997, he along with his accomplices killed a villager over a property dispute. He remained in jail for about a year and after his acquittal formed his own gang.
Two auto-thieves held
Acting on a tip-off, the police laid a trap near Ghode Wala Mandir in Rajouri Garden and arrested the two men when they arrived there in a black motorcycle bearing no registration number plate. They were identified as Sunil and Rakesh Dalal. Both of them took to auto-lifting to make quick money, the police said.
Man commits suicide
He did not leave behind any suicide note.
Held in murder case
According to the police, Abdul Salam, who carried a reward of Rs. 25,000 on his head, was wanted in the murder case of businessman Saleem Qureshi. Acting on a tip-off on Sunday that Salam would visit Gokulpuri, the police laid a trap at Ganga Vihar pulia and arrested him. One loaded revolver of .32 bore along with four live cartridges were reportedly recovered from his possession.
Bail plea rejected
Metropolitan Magistrate Manoj Kumar refused to enlarge Okorie Stephen Chyre as he failed to produce a person who could give surety on his behalf. According to the prosecution, Chyre was arrested at gate number three of Tihar jail while carrying a button-actuated knife into the prison on Friday. He had gone to meet a friend who was lodged there in connection with some other case. He was produced in the court on July 15 and sent to judicial custody of 14 days.
