dated July 19, 1956: Changes in Asia

Prime Minister Nehru has said that an atmosphere other than that of fear must be created in which peace could be achieved through the pacific solution of problems. To arrive at a truly peaceful atmosphere, peaceful means must be used. Otherwise, further obstacles to peace would be created. Mr. Nehru was speaking at a reception organised in Paris on July 17 by the France-India Parliamentary Group whose object is to promote friendship between the two countries. About 50 Deputies were present. Mr. Nehru said one of the great changes of the present age was the liberation of the Asian people. That had released great forces which must be controlled and harmonised with other forces in the world. Such forces existed also in Africa. M. Paul Devinat, Chairman of the Group, expressed the hope that a similar group would be formed in the Indian Parliament in order to encourage cultural and trade exchanges between France and India. Mr. Nehru said he would support the formation of such a group in the Indian Parliament.
