It was a different experience altogether for the nearly 80 students of two divisions of seventh standard of Auxilium Nava Jyoti Higher Secondary School, Kunnamangalam, as they listened to resource persons at the Newspaper In Education (NIE) programme of The Hindu on Tuesday.

Earlier, Anice Joseph, Principal of the school, launched the programme for the academic year 2006-07 in the district.

The two resource persons, in their 45-minute lecture, took the students to various facets of NIE, on what constitute a newspaper, history of newspaper, the history of The Hindu and difference in structure between a story and news story.

The students were told that once they started reading a newspaper, it became a habit. "It is like a textbook that you carry the whole life," explained a resource person.

The students added their own perspective to questions asked about the newspaper.

The lecture took the students through the concept of 5 Ws (what, where, who, when and why) and 1 H (how), the basic ingredients of any news story. They were told that an ordinary story that they might have heard during their childhood followed a structure of first explaining the background and then the plot and switching on to the climax and then the end, which might be a moral or so on. It is generally known as pyramid or triangle structure.

But when it comes to a news story, an inverted pyramid or triangle style is adopted with a headline, intro giving the most important information in the first paragraph and additional information in the following paragraphs and so on.
