Students protest admission chaos

Special Correspondent

GULBARGA: Several hundred students from various schools boycotted their classes and marched to the Deputy Commissioners office here demanding affordable and uniform fee structure for professional courses in the State and a pro-student admission policy.

Students, under the banner of the Students Federation of India (SFI), came in a procession to the Deputy Commissioner's office shouting slogans against the State Government for the mess created in admission to medical, engineering and dental courses this year. According to students the high fee structure allows private institutes to exploit students and deny higher education to meritorious students from economically weaker sections.

In a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, the students demanded that the State and Union Governments come out with a comprehensive legislation to regulate the fee for professional courses. It also demanded that the government take concrete steps to end collection of donations.

The SFI demanded that the Government ask all colleges and universities to form committees to control sexual harassment of women.
