News Analysis
* In "Bihar flood situation worsens" (July 14, 2006), the strapline was "With Nepal releasing water from barrage, situation threatens to become grave". The report presents the story that Nepal had released water from the Gandak barrage which is the main cause of floods in Bihar. A former Member, Central Water Commission, says that it is factually incorrect. During a flood, barrages cannot but allow the river to flow over without any moderation. The Gandak barrage on the India-Nepal border was constructed jointly and its operation is very much within the control of India. The floods in Patna city and other places on the south bank of the Ganga were said to have been caused by the Morhar river. This river joins the Ganga from the south and its flows are entirely from the Indian catchment.
* In "French honour for M.S. Swaminathan" (July 15, 2006), a reader says TERI was incorrectly referred to as the Tata Energy Research Institute. TERI clarifies that in 2000 the name was changed to The Energy and Resources Institute.
* A reader says that in "AICTE cannot take direct action against deemed varsities: court" (Tamil Nadu, July 14, 2006, page 1), the text did not make it clear that a technical institution is a technical institution and cannot include a deemed university. This is because a deemed university is a university as per the definition in the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the University Grants Commission (UGC) Acts. The Chennai Bureau clarifies: "The wording of the judgment is: `... the technical institution is a technical institution other than a university which is defined in Sec 2(1) and which also includes an institution which is deemed to be a university.' The wording in the report was no doubt confusing. Deemed universities are universities and not technical institutions. Once a technical institution becomes a deemed university, it ceases to be a technical institution."
* Factual errors. In "Unsung martyr", a feature on Budhi Kunderan (The Hindu-Magazine, July 16, 2006, page 5), it was said that Kunderan smashed Meckiff for 14 runs in an over at Kanpur. There was also a reference to Kunderan's "out-of-the-world leg side stumping of Mackay off Jasu Patel" at the same venue. As a reader points out, both the events occurred at Madras during the fourth Test against Australia in January 1960. The second Test of the series was played in Kanpur. Kunderan made his Test debut in the third Test of the same series in Bombay.
* A reader says that an entry in the scoreboard of the England versus Pakistan Test at Lord's ("Strauss sets up victory push", "Sport", July 17, 2006) should have read "England 2nd innings: G. Jones c Kamran Akmal b Kaneria 16", and not "G. Jones c Jones b Kaneria 16" as was published. The reader is right. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
