Letters to the Editor
The terror unleashed by Maoists at the Errabore base camp in Chhattisgarh killing 27 Salwa Judum activists is the worst of its kind in recent times. Opening fire on fleeing people, burning people live, etc., make the attacks more wicked than the 11/7 terrorist attacks of Mumbai, because Maoists claim to be the protectors of the poor, downtrodden, and under-privileged. In tune with the customary ritual, the Chief Minister has announced monetary compensation to the victims and instructed the police to step up operations against naxalites wherever they are active. Does it mean the Government did not know Maoists were active in that area?
Harish Betha,
* * * The incident reinforces the magnitude of the naxal menace in our country. It is the Andhra Pradesh Government that is squarely to blame. Soon after assuming power, it allowed People's War a free run for about six months in the name of talks. It allowed them time to regroup and establish links with the ULFA and Maoists of Nepal. As a result, a red corridor has been established from Nepal to Andhra Pradesh. One wonders when the UPA Government will realise that it is facing a war-like situation and is not just dealing with crime.
B.R. Haran,
* * * Maoists have no right to kill innocent tribals in the name of revolution. They have only exhibited their level of perversion. The tribals of Chhattisgarh seem to have paid for their courage of standing up for themselves.
G.L.N. Murthy,
