Letters to the Editor
The Israel-Hizbollah confrontation is a threat to West Asian stability and could snowball into a major crisis with the involvement of Iran and Syria, apart from Hamas who have made public their support to Lebanon. The call by G8 nations for both Israel and Hizbollah to exercise restraint has come at the right time. The international community should make sincere efforts to resolve the crisis.
Suvaid Yaseen,
* * * Edmund Burke said if good people do not act, evil will succeed ("all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.") No matter how distasteful the actions of Israel, they are important for the protection of its citizens. Israel is justified in acting tough with the Hizbollah.
Malolan R. Cadambi,
* * * A few readers have suggested that India emulate Israel in matters of national security. Rocket attacks have killed eight persons in the northern Israeli city of Haifa. Those advocating Israel-like response to terror would do well to ponder whether Israelis themselves are able to sleep in peace despite their exemplary security arrangements and intelligence network.
S. Shiv Nath,
* * * Hizbollah has been a militant outfit all these years. But how is one to describe Israel vis-à-vis its occupation of the Gaza strip and the atrocities it has committed against Palestinians all these years?
Varudu Raghavendra,
