V.P. Sathyan fatally knocked down by train

CHENNAI: V.P. Sathyan, former captain of the Indian national football team, died at Pallavaram, near here, on Tuesday after he was knocked down by a suburban electric train.

Mr. Sathyan was an assistant manager with Indian bank.

According to family and police sources, he boarded the train at Guindy and alighted at Pallavaram. He was knocked down by the train at 11.15 a.m.

Police said they recovered a suicide note written in Malayalam, quoting Mr. Sathyan as saying he had lost all his wealth and hence wanted to end his life.

The body was removed to the Chromepet General Hospital.
