Valiathan committee on AIIMS meets

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The four-member expert committee headed by M.S. Valiathan, set up to look into the functioning of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), held its first meeting here on Tuesday.

Last week, the Centre announced the terms of reference of the committee, set up in June following the war of words between Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Anbumani Ramadoss and AIIMS Director P. Venugopal.

The committee will make recommendations to turn the premier institution into a centre of excellence and a leader in public health. The committee, which has been asked to give its report within three months, would examine whether the AIIMS has achieved the purpose and objectives for which it was established.

Besides Dr. Valiathan, former Director of the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology in Thiruvananthapuram, the committee comprises M.K. Bhan, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology; P.K. Hota, Union Health and Family Welfare Secretary; and R.K. Srivastava, Director General of Health Services.

The panel has been mandated to make recommendations for enhancing and strengthening the autonomy of AIIMS to enable it to fulfil its objectives.
