Udhagamandalam: A leopard was found dead near Gudalur on Tuesday. Stating that the carcass of the female carnivore was recovered from a tea garden in Devala Range, the District Forest Officer, Gudalur, T.S. Dange, told The Hindu here on Tuesday that a forest veterinarian had been deputed to determine the cause of death. Lamenting that the number of wild animal casualties was on the rise in Gudalur and surroundings, he said the root cause was destruction of habitat due to intensified crop cultivation.
Man-animal conflict
Cautioning that if efforts were not taken forthwith to relieve pressure on the forests, man-wild animal conflict was bound to get out of hand in Gudalur area, he said that if the people continued to ignore this fact, it would affect all. Pointing out that leopards normally subscribed to the live and let live policy especially in areas where forests and habitations were contiguous, the Wildlife Warden, the Nilgiris, Rakesh Kumar Dogra, said that the people should be sensitive to the needs of the carnivores.
