Assembly adjourned sine die

Bangalore: The Legislative Assembly was adjourned sine die on Tuesday at the end of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy's reply to the bribery charge against him.

However, the Legislative Council will meet on Wednesday, as the Chief Minister has to reply there.

Mr. Kumaraswamy has convened an all-party meeting here on Wednesday morning to discuss an order of the Krishna River Water Disputes Tribunal. — Special Correspondent

B.C. Patel assumes charge

Bangalore: The former Chief Justice of the Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir high courts, B.C. Patel, on Tuesday formally assumed charge as head of the Commission of Inquiry into the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor project. The commission has been constituted by the State Government, which is opposed to various aspects of the project undertaken by a private promoter, Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprise. — Special Correspondent

`Speaker is not acting independently'

Bangalore: A.K. Subbaiah, former Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, has charged Legislative Assembly Speaker Krishna with not acting independently and allowing himself to be dictated to by Janata Dal (Secular) leader H.D. Deve Gowda.

Mr. Subbaiah, who is the chairman of the Political Affairs Committee of the All-India Progressive Janata Dal, told presspersons here on Tuesday that the former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had the right to adduce reasons for his resignation from the Assembly. But the Speaker did not allow him to make a statement. — Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Experts from the Department of Health and Family Welfare will answer questions on `Population stabilisation,' during `Hello Akashavani,' a live phone-in programme to be broadcast by Akshavani, Bangalore, from 9.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Courier firms oppose curbs on business

Bangalore: The proposed amendment restricting courier companies from carrying letters weighing less than 300 grams was causing anxiety in the industry as such packages formed 90 per cent of courier business, said V. Srinath, president of the Karnataka Couriers Association at a book release function on Monday.

R.C. Purohit, president of the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry released a small handbook on the negative impact that the proposed amendments to the Indian Post Office Act, 1898 would have on the courier industry.

M.S. Harinath, legal adviser to the courier industries, said that if there was an embargo on courier services, the postal service should not be allowed to handle letters above 300 grams. — Staff Reporter

`Re-open hostels'

DAVANGERE: Students affiliated to the Students Federation of India (SFI) took out a procession here on Tuesday demanding re-opening of all the hostels run by the Social Welfare Department. Students said that though schools and colleges had started functioning, most of the hostels had not been re-opened. Hence students were put to a lot of hardship, they said. Other demands of the students include release of scholarships to Scheduled Caste students, fee concession to students of Backward Classes and a meeting of students, principal of colleges and warden of hostels. — Staff Correspondent

Arrested

Bidar: Police have arrested a zilla panchayat member, a taluk panchayat member and a gram panchayat president on the charge of gambling in Ashtur village in Bidar taluk on Monday. They have been produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody. Acting on a tip-off, police raided an abandoned monument in Ashtur and arrested six persons. They are zilla panchayat member and wrestler Inayat Ali, Bidar taluk panchayat member Gokul Singh, Kamathana gram panchayat president Mohammad Gousuddin and Karim Sab, Ahmed Hussein and Lakshman Rao Patil.

In another incident, police arrested five persons on the charge of gambling in Ashtur village. They are Abdul Samid, Mohammad Masin, Sheikh Ibrahim, Abdul Hakim, and Vajid were arrested, police said. — Staff Correspondent

Inquiry sought

BIJAPUR: Members of Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat staged a protest here on Tuesday seeking a high-level inquiry into charges of corruption in Karnataka State Women's University, Bijapur, with regard to recruitment of faculty members. Students from different colleges here boycotted classes and joined the protest. A procession was taken out to Deputy Commissioner's office from Khed College campus. It was part of the movement "Save Women's University", launched by the organisation. Speakers alleged large-scale corruption in the recruitment process under way. They handed over a memorandum addressed to Higher Education Minister D.H. Shankaramurthy, to Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mohsin. — Staff Correspondent

Home Guards

Bidar: A Quick Reaction Team of Home Guards will assist Bidar police in emergency situations. A team of 75 Home Guards has been trained for the purpose. They have been trained in flood and rain emergency management, rescue and first-aid to victims of natural disasters, weapons training, use of wireless and communication networks, and in co-ordinating various security and law and order agencies, District Commandant Squadron Leader M. Naimuddin said in a release. Superintendent of Police Roopa Divakar inaugurated the new office building of the Home Guards in the District Police Office premises on Monday.

There are 750 Home Guards in the district. Of them, 150 will be present at all times in the head office, Mr. Naimuddin said. — Staff Correspondent

Protests against blasts

BIJAPUR: Members of Sangha Parivar protested here and in other parts of Bijapur and Bagalkot districts against the serial blasts in Mumbai and Srinagar. Activists under the banner of Sriram Sena took out a protest march and burnt the effigies of terrorists at Gandhi Chowk. — Staff Correspondent

Hide seized from resort

MYSORE: The Forest Department and the Beechanahalli Police on Tuesday raided a private resort near the Kabini backwaters in H.D. Kote and seized hide and deer antlers.

The items, estimated to cost Rs. 2 lakh, were recovered from the resort. The manager of the resort has been taken into custody following the raid, which was carried out on a tip-off.

A case has been registered under the Wildlife Protection Act for illegal possession of animal derivatives. — Special Correspondent

Loans for artisans

MYSORE: The Government has invited applications from artisans and skilled labourers for sanction of loans under the Shrama Shakthi Yojane.

According to a press release, application forms can be obtained from the Backward Class Extension Officer of the respective taluk panchayat during office hours.

The last date for submitting applications is July 20. Details can be obtained from the Backward Class Extension Officer and Taluk Panchayat Executive Officer. — Staff Correspondent

Fine arts course at CAVA

MYSORE: The eligibility test for admissions to Master of Fine Arts (MFA) course at Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts (CAVA) in Mysore for the academic year 2006-07 will be held on July 27. According to a press release, those who have passed Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) course or equivalent examination is eligible to attend the test.

Selection process for competitions

MYSORE: The selection process for South Zone Balashri will be held at Jawahar Bal Bhavan at Bannimantap in the city at 1.30 pm on July 22. According to a press release, children aged between 9 and 16 can participate in the selection process. Participants in the competitive art category should know drawing, clay modelling and making artefacts, and those in the creative art category should know classical dance, folk dance, music and instrumental music.

Woman poisons family

HUBLI: Frustrated with petty quarrels in the family, a housewife allegedly poisoned 10 members of the family at Huilgol in Gadag district. Police said on Tuesday that the woman allegedly mixed poison in rotis. While three were treated at the Gadag District Hospital, the rest were shifted to the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences here. - UNI

`Save Tirupati' campaign

HUBLI: Activists of Shriram Sena here organised a protest rally as part of "Save Tirupati — Eradicate Terrorism" campaign and burnt effigies of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajashekara Reddy. Addressing the protesters, sena leader Pramod Acharya condemned the alleged Christian conversions at Tirupati. - UNI

Corporation staff assaulted

HUBLI: Tension prevailed in Gokul road area here when Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) activists objected to the way the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation's (HDMC) staff caught stray cattle in the city. One of the personnel assaulted the activists when other VHP activists rushed to their rescue. The police intervened and eased the tension. — UNI
