Assembly re-adopts Bill on BDA Act

Special Correspondent

Bill had been rejected by Council

  • Bill enables BDA to acquire 900 acres for hi-tech city
  • It amends Section 38 (B) of the BDA Act, 1976
  • Project will have state-of-the-art facilities

BANGALORE: The Legislative Assembly on Tuesday re-adopted the Bangalore Development Authority (Second Amendment) Bill, 2005, which had been rejected by the Upper House. The Bill enables the BDA to acquire 900 acres to develop an integrated hi-tech city on the outskirts of Bangalore.

The Bill, which had been adopted by the House earlier, was today passed by voice vote. Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs M.P. Prakash tabled the Bill on behalf of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and said the Bill had a provision for a one-time measure to acquire land for developing the hi-tech city. In order to implement the scheme for the formation of the hi-tech city layout and a road between Sarjapur and Hosur roads, it had become necessary to amend Section 38 (B) of the BDA Act, 1976, he said.

Mr. Prakash said 40 per cent of the total area was earmarked for construction of houses and commercial buildings.

The project, which was proposed by the previous government, would have a six-lane road and state-of-the-art facilities.

He said the Bill had been rejected by the Council owing to a wrong interpretation that it was meant only for the information technology sector.

The discussion on the Bill provided an opportunity to the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party members to voice the complaint that only a select group of legislators had been allotted house sites in Bangalore and several eligible legislators were left out.

    Speaker calls for notice

The Speaker suggested to the members to send him a notice on the subject to facilitate a detailed discussion on the issue.
