KADAPA: Seven hundred and fifty three gram panchayats in Kadapa district will go to polls out of 762 panchayats notified, following the High Court's stay granted on elections in nine panchayats in Sambepalle mandal of Rayachoti constituency. On a petition filed by Moode Lakshma Naik, MPTC member of Chinnabidiki in Sambepalle mandal, the High Court granted stay on all 14 gram panchayats, but elected bodies in five panchayats were yet to complete their term. Settipalle panchayat which has 50 villages was divided into three gram panchayats - Settipalle, Adavikampalle and Chinnabidiki - in 1995. As local people moved the court against the division, elections were not held in 2001. The High Court upheld the division of Settipalle into three panchayats in 2004. Accordingly, officials made arrangements for the elections, while some persons secured orders from the High Court to conduct elections for Settipalle panchayat alone. Another writ petition was filed seeking continuation of three panchayats. The High Court stayed the election.
