NEW DELHI: International Master Rahul Shetty continued his winning sequence when he overpowered higher-rated Canadian IM Tomas Krnan to share the lead with Abhijit Kunte and three others with perfect scores after three rounds of the Canadian Open chess tournament in Kitchener on Monday. Israel's Alexander Huzman and Cuba's duo of Walter Arencibia and Fidel Corrales are part of the leaders' pack. Shetty, who had gained the most from top seed Evgeny Bareev's blunder in a 32-move second round match, outplayed Krnan, rated 2399, came in 66 moves of Ruy Lopez. The other three Indians, Kunte, Chandrashekhar Gokhale and Swati Ghate, also defeated their Canadian rivals. Kunte, playing black, overwhelmed Nokolay Noritsyn in 34 moves of Sicilian to maintain his winning run. Gokhale (2.5) took 41 moves to stop Federico Austria and Swati (2) won in 49 moves after threatening to checkmate Steve Demmery. Second-seeded Ukrainian Alexander Moiseenko (2649), winner of the Quebec Open chess championship last week in Montreal ahead of joint runner-up Kunte and Swati, was forced to split the point with Israel's IM Leonid Gerzhoy in 34 moves. Moiseekno next plays white against Shetty.
