CHENNAI: Terrorists, who attempt to create panic in the country, will not succeed as people are united in their bid to defeat the "nefarious designs," said Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee here on Tuesday.

The terrorists might have succeeded in killing some people and destroying some buildings and creating panic. The forces of destabilisation were trying to divide the people on the basis of caste and community. But the "evil designs" of these forces would not succeed as the indomitable spirit of oneness and solidarity were in the veins of the people living from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and so long as the Congress party was ruling the country.

Declaring open the renovated Rajiv Gandhi Memorial arch at Kathipara Junction here, he said in this hour of crisis party workers had a special responsibility. They should work with firmness and frustrate the attempts of these "divisive forces."

The Congress was not a mere political party, but a movement committed to resurrection and reconstruction of a new India in the land of the oldest civilisation of the universe.

Under the guidance of party president Sonia Gandhi and the leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, many welfare schemes were being implemented.

Mr. Mukherjee paid glowing tributes to Kamaraj and G.K. Moopanar, whose bust size statues were installed on the arch. Both renounced the post of Prime Minister. While Kamaraj brought about social revolution and empowered backward classes and the downtrodden, Moopanar was a man of commitment and a good organiser.

Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation G.K. Vasan said the party was a force to reckon with in the State. No party could think of winning the elections without aligning with the Congress.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnasswamy said Rajiv Gandhi's dreams were being realised under the United Progressive Government at the Centre.
