In a release here, the organisation said Kamaraj had an abiding love for The Nilgiris and its native people. He was responsible for setting up the college in the late 1950s in the face of stiff resistance from some of his colleagues. The college was housed in the Stone House, the first house on the hills built in 1821 by John Sullivan, the then administrator. Like Kamaraj, Sullivan was a great humanist. Bus burning case adjourned to August 7
The defense counsel for the accused 2, 3 and 4, had approached the High Court seeking reports of the then Vice-Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, and the Dharmapuri Collector on the incident, which were reportedly submitted to the respective authorities. Five Sri Lankan fishermen held
Official sources said they were found fishing about six nautical miles off Manapad coast. The Coast Guard handed over them to Thermal Nagar police. Official sources said a committee headed by the District Collector would interrogate the fishermen on Wednesday to ascertain the reason for venturing into the Indian waters. Staff Reporter
Last date for kerosene purchase extended
Cardholders who did not buy additional quantity of kerosene in June could purchase the same on or before July-end, according to a release from the Collectorate here on Tuesday. District supply office had been offering two litres of kerosene to cardholders in urban areas and one litre to people in rural areas.
Voter list verification in Dindigul district soon
If there are mistakes, they can be rectified. Voters could also inform change of address or death of voters, if any, to them, said the Collector, R. Vasuki. If there were any changes in photographs in the list, voters could handover a passport size colour photograph to the verification officials. Persons whose names were not included in the existing list could submit Form VI along with passport size colour photograph.

According to PWD sources, Thekkadi and Uthamapalayam recorded a rainfall of 15 mm and 5 mm respectively. The water level in the Periyar Dam was 124 feet with an inflow of 1,706 cusecs and a discharge of 1,243 cusecs. The level in the Vaiga dam was 44.9 feet with an inflow of 836 cusecs and an outflow of 900 cusecs. Staff Reporter

Interest rate revised
ERODE: Cooperative banks in the district have increased interest rate for deposits. Special Officer and Managing Director of Erode District Central Cooperative Bank K.M. Vellingiri told presspersons on Tuesday that hitherto the Erode District Central Cooperative Bank granted 6.5 per cent interest for the deposits. From Tuesday, the depositors would get half per cent extra. The interest rate for the fixed deposits would be 7 per cent and senior citizens would get 7.75 per cent. The 220 Primary Agricultural Cooperative Banks that provided 7 per cent interest for the deposits had increased it to 7.5 per cent and for the senior citizens 8.25 per cent. - Staff Reporter

Uneasy calm in Kanyakumari
Fishermen in few coastal areas did not venture into sea for fishing. The busy Kanyakumari and other shores wore a deserted look. Flow of tourists was very poor in Kanyakumari and hawkers did not want to risk their lives. Many shops remained closed in Kanyakumari. Few families vacated their places and preferred to stay with their relatives in other places. However, the district administration geared up the official machinery to allay fears among fishermen.
