DMK farmers' wing thanks Karunanidhi

CHENNAI: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Farmers' Wing will organise a conference to thank Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for reviving farmers' markets and writing off cooperative loans.

A meeting of district organisers here on Monday requested the Government to revive the system of direct procurement of paddy and remove existing discrepancies in the process. — Special Correspondent

Appeal to Chief Minister

CHENNAI: The Save Nilgiris Campaign has appealed to the Chief Minister to rename the Government Arts College in Udhagamandalam as Kamaraj-Sullivan Arts College.

In a release here, the organisation said Kamaraj had an abiding love for The Nilgiris and its native people. He was responsible for setting up the college in the late 1950s in the face of stiff resistance from some of his colleagues. The college was housed in the Stone House, the first house on the hills built in 1821 by John Sullivan, the then administrator. Like Kamaraj, Sullivan was a great humanist. "The high rate of literacy and development in The Nilgiris owe a great deal to these two visionaries," the release said. — Special Correspondent

UNESCO offer for Kulandaiswamy

CHENNAI: Senior academician and former Vice-Chancellor of the Anna University V.C. Kulandaiswamy has been invited by the Director-General of the UNESCO to serve as a member of the International follow up committee for the World Conference on Higher Education (WCHE).

Prof. Kulandaiswamy would be alternate member for Asia and Pacific region. The membership would be for two years, according to a communication from the office of the DG-UNESCO's office.— Special Correspondent

Bus burning case adjourned to August 7

SALEM: The First Additional District Sessions judge, D. Krishna Raja, on Tuesday adjourned the Dharmapuri bus burning case to August 7 after he was told that a revision case (RC) filed by one of the defense counsels was taken up for hearing in the Madras High Court.

The defense counsel for the accused 2, 3 and 4, had approached the High Court seeking reports of the then Vice-Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, and the Dharmapuri Collector on the incident, which were reportedly submitted to the respective authorities. On Tuesday, the Salem court was told that the petition had been taken up in the High Court. After hearing the arguments, the judge posted the case to August 7. — Special Correspondent

Five Sri Lankan fishermen held

Tuticorin: The Coast Guard arrested five Sri Lankan fishermen on Tuesday after they ventured into the Indian waters for fishing without any proper document.

Official sources said they were found fishing about six nautical miles off Manapad coast.

The Coast Guard handed over them to Thermal Nagar police. Official sources said a committee headed by the District Collector would interrogate the fishermen on Wednesday to ascertain the reason for venturing into the Indian waters. — Staff Reporter

Last date for kerosene purchase extended

DINDIGUL : The last date for purchasing additional quantity of kerosene meant for June from Public Distribution System shops has been extended up to July 31.

Cardholders who did not buy additional quantity of kerosene in June could purchase the same on or before July-end, according to a release from the Collectorate here on Tuesday.

District supply office had been offering two litres of kerosene to cardholders in urban areas and one litre to people in rural areas.

Voter list verification in Dindigul district soon

DINDIGUL : Verification of the voter list will begin in the district shortly. Verification officials will undertake door-to-door verification.

If there are mistakes, they can be rectified.

Voters could also inform change of address or death of voters, if any, to them, said the Collector, R. Vasuki.

If there were any changes in photographs in the list, voters could handover a passport size colour photograph to the verification officials. Persons whose names were not included in the existing list could submit Form VI along with passport size colour photograph.

TNSTC bus attached in Tirunelveli

TIRUNELVELI : A Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus was impounded here by the court officials on Tuesday as compensation was not given to an accident victim. The police said N. Uchchimakaali of Vadakku Apparkulam near Nanguneri sustained serious injuries in a road accident in 2004. Though a court here had ordered the TNSTC to give a compensation of Rs. 1.38 lakh, it was not given. Based on an appeal filed by the victim, the court ordered the attachment of a bus. Following the order, the court officials attached the bus, about to proceed to Nagercoil from the new bus-stand at Vaeinthankulam, on Tuesday.

Water level

MADURAI: Periyar dam recorded a rainfall of 28 mm on Tuesday.

According to PWD sources, Thekkadi and Uthamapalayam recorded a rainfall of 15 mm and 5 mm respectively.

The water level in the Periyar Dam was 124 feet with an inflow of 1,706 cusecs and a discharge of 1,243 cusecs.

The level in the Vaiga dam was 44.9 feet with an inflow of 836 cusecs and an outflow of 900 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Mass contact programme

ERODE: The District Revenue Officer will hold a mass contact programme on July 26 at the primary school at Ganapathipalayam Panchayat, near Vellakoil in Kangeyam division. According to a releas, all department officials will participate along with the local body representatives.

Inaugurated

ERODE: For speedy disposal of cases related to partition of lands, property dispute and some other civil issues, a Continuous Lok Adalat was inaugurated on the District Court complex here on Monday by Principal District Judge Kannan. He said retired District Judge M. Krishnamurthy would be appointed as the judge for the court that would try cases once in a fortnight.

Interest rate revised

ERODE: Cooperative banks in the district have increased interest rate for deposits. Special Officer and Managing Director of Erode District Central Cooperative Bank K.M. Vellingiri told presspersons on Tuesday that hitherto the Erode District Central Cooperative Bank granted 6.5 per cent interest for the deposits. From Tuesday, the depositors would get half per cent extra.

The interest rate for the fixed deposits would be 7 per cent and senior citizens would get 7.75 per cent. The 220 Primary Agricultural Cooperative Banks that provided 7 per cent interest for the deposits had increased it to 7.5 per cent and for the senior citizens 8.25 per cent. - Staff Reporter

History-sheeter held

PERAMBALUR: A 27-year-old history-sheeter, S. Suresh alias `Pattarai' Suresh of Ponmalaipatti in Tiruchi, who was wanted in connection with several cases including burglary and murder, surrendered at the Judicial Magistrate court here on Tuesday. He was also involved in a case of attempt to murder the Inspector of Police of Fort Station, Tiruchi.

Imported DAP on sale

Thanjavur: Imported Di Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) fertiliser, white in colour, was being distributed through fertiliser retail outlets in the district, according to a release from M. Jothi, Joint-Director of Agriculture.

The DAP produced in India is black in colour. DAP of both the colours had the same nutrient content of 18 per cent nitrogen and 46 per cent phosphorous, he said.

Farmers' grievance day

Thanjavur: The monthly farmers' grievance day would be held at Panagal building here on July 20. Farmers can air their grievances related to agriculture, irrigation, animal husbandry, co-operation, horticulture, electricity for redress.

Campus interview

PUDUKOTTAI: The Protechsoft Technologies, Chennai, will conduct a campus interview at Sudharsan Engineering College, Sathiyamangalam in Pudukottai district on July 21 and 22. Students of 2006 and 2007 batches, of BE / B. Tech, MCA, M.Sc. (SW), MS (IT) from colleges located in Tiruchi, Thanjavur and Pudukkottai districts can participate in the event. They should have obtained 65 per cent marks with no arrears. Registration will be through colleges where they underwent and at present undergoing the course, a press release from the college said. Mettur level

Tiruchi: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 103.47 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 22,510 cusecs, and the outflow18,000 cusecs.

Uneasy calm in Kanyakumari

Nagercoil: Uneasy calm continued to prevail for the second day on Tuesday after tsunami hit the Java island in Indonesia. It was a sleepless night for the people in the coastal areas of the district including Kanyakumari.

Fishermen in few coastal areas did not venture into sea for fishing. The busy Kanyakumari and other shores wore a deserted look. Flow of tourists was very poor in Kanyakumari and hawkers did not want to risk their lives. Many shops remained closed in Kanyakumari. Few families vacated their places and preferred to stay with their relatives in other places.

However, the district administration geared up the official machinery to allay fears among fishermen.

Detained under Goondas Act

TIRUNELVELI: A person was arrested under the Goondas Act on Tuesday. The police said a lorry owner V. Murugaiah (36) of Achchampatti under the Sankarankovil Taluk police station limits and lorry driver A. Muthumari (27) of Vadakku Puthur near Sankarankovil were arrested on July 10 when they were illegally mining sand from the Nichchopanathi riverbed.

Based on the recommendation of the Superintendent of Police N.K. Senthamarai Kannan, Collector G. Prakash ordered the arrest of Murugaiah.

Free coaching classes

TIRUNELVELI: Manonmaniam Sundaranar University has proposed to hold free coaching classes for Indian Administrative Service and Indian Police Service aspirants from SC/ST communities. According to the Registrar, P. Chellathurai, coaching for examinations of State and Central services would also be given to those from Palayamkottai and Tirunelveli and candidates of university departments in MSU after an entrance test.

Aspirants should send applications to P. Natarajan, Programme Coordinator, Department of Tamil, MSU on or before August 1.

Cyclist dies in accident

Tuticorin : S. Durairaj (55), a cylist, was fatally knocked down by a lorry at Pudukottai near here on Monday. He suffered head injuries and died on the spot. The lorry driver Balakrishnan was arrested.

Lawyers boycott court

Tuticorin: Members of Tuticorin Bar Association on Tuesday boycotted the court proceedings against the proposed modifications in the Criminal Procedure Court. The police said about 350 lawyers took part in the boycott.
