Central team visits award-winning village

Sangareddy: A 15-member team of Union Secretariat Services and deputy secretaries visited the Nirmal Gram Puraskar winner, Topugonda village, in Sangareddy mandal on Tuesday. Later, district Collector B. Venkatesam explained the progress of development programmes implemented in the district.

The Collector said preference had been given to weaker sections, handicapped persons and women in all Government programmes. - Staff Reporter

State-wide dharna by teachers

HYDERABAD: Members of Andhra Pradesh Teachers' Federation staged dharna before district Collectorates all over the State to focus attention on their demands, which include sanction of two notional increments to 1.5 lakh apprentice teachers, considering the period of apprenticeship for automatic advancement scheme and fixation of pay scales at the eight-year and 16-year mark in their careers. - Staff Reporter

Call to fill lineman posts with contract staff

HYDERABAD: United Electricity Employees' Union has demanded filling of the proposed 7,114 posts of linemen with contract staff already working in the department.

The union, in a statement on Tuesday, criticised the move by Discoms to fix educational qualifications and merit for selection.

It said union members would stage a protest on July 20. - Special Correspondent

Jute mills reopened

VIZIANAGARAM: Following the Government Order banning strike in East Coast, Aruna and Bobbili Jute mills, the Hoogly management reopened the mills after 146 days on Tuesday.

Production in the three mills will begin after maintenance work is completed on Thursday. Despite a call by IFTU and CITU leaders asking workers to stay away from work 20 to 30 per cent of the workforce attended duty in the morning.

The union leaders, however, have decided to organise `Chalo Collectorate' on July 24 to protest against the Government Order.

- Correspondent Plea to withdraw reforms in PSUs

HYDERABAD: Joint Action Committee of Employees, Teachers and Workers has urged the State Government to withdraw its move to implement the third phase of reforms in public sector undertakings.

A delegation of JAC representatives submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy asking him not to go ahead with the move. - Special Correspondent

Legal centre to be opened

Hyderabad: The Movement for Peace and Justice (MPJ) will open its State level legal centre in Hyderabad on July 23. The centre aims at providing legal aid to the poor and illiterate.

Ahmed Abdul Azeem, vice president, MPJ, in a statement said it was also proposed to open such legal centres at district level.

About 2.78 crore cases were pending in various courts in the country and according to one estimate it would take at least two years for their clearance.

Low pressure persists in Bay of Bengal

HYDERABAD: A trough of low pressure lay over the Bay of Bengal near the Andhra Pradesh coast on Tuesday. Under its influence, isolated rains are likely in the State on Wednesday, according to a forecast issued by the State Met Office.

During the 24-hour period ending this morning, Chennur in Adilabad district recorded rainfall of 3 cm; and Mancherial, Vizianagaram and Atmakur one cm each. - Special Correspondent

Request to retired policemen

ADILABAD: Adilabad Superintendent of Police Kripanand Tripathi Ujela on Tuesday urged retired policemen to join for bandobast duties during the sarpanch elections. In a press release he said interested retired personnel could report to the respective Sub Divisional Police Officers immediately. Review meet on RIA

KARIMNAGAR: State Information Commissioners R Dileep Reddy, A Subba Rao and K Sudhakar Rao will visit Karimnagar on Wednesday and conduct a review meeting with the district officials about the implementation of the Right to Information Act and also inspect various offices in the Collectorate complex. — Staff Reporter

KARIMNAGAR: The first general body of the newly constituted Zilla Parishad would be held on July 23 at the ZP conference hall here. Speaking on the occasion, he said that there was a severe shortage of blood in hospitals and people should donate blood to help those in need. ONGOLE : Kola Nagaratnam topped the Government Junior College at Tangutur in the intermediate examinations. It was the highest in government junior colleges in the State this year. However, her father, a teashop owner, could not pay the annual tuition fees of Rs. 26,000 required for college. On hearing of her situation, Anand Granites proprietor, P. Anand, came forward to pay the fees. A social activist, K. Pullaiah, facilitated her admission to the Prakasam College of Engineering and Technology, Kandukur, where the management agreed to provide her free hostel accommodation and pay her mess charges. - Special Correspondent

APSRTC workers stage fast

ELURU : The employees of Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) on Tuesday, demanding the transfer of employees from the Kovvuru and Nidadavole bus depots of be stopped forthwith underwent a relay fast here under the banner of APSRTC Staff & Workers Federation, resenting the reported move to wind up the two depots. G.V.L. Narasimha Rao, president of the CITU district unit, addressing a gathering of RTC workers, accused the State Government of preparing the ground to privatise the APSRTC in line with the World Bank prescription. - Staff Reporter

CITU district secretary dead

VIZIANAGARAM : T.D. Prasad, CITU district secretary, died of fever at his home here in the early hours of Tuesday. He was 48.

He is survived by wife and two children. CPI (M) district secretary M. Krishna Murthy, AITUC president V. Krishnam Raju and leaders of several employees' unions condoled his death. - Correspondent
