Coir industry seeks more funds
Staff Reporter
KOCHI:
Chairman of the Coir Board A.C. Jose has made a plea to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Industry for more funds for the coir industry considering the key role it plays in the economy of the State and the large number of people it employs.
A press release from the Coir Board said that the plea was made when the department-related Parliamentary committee visited Kochi and Alappuzha last week.
The committee members, led by Santosh Bargodia, MP, held discussions with senior officials of the Coir Board, Khadi and Village Industries Commission, National Small Industries Corporation, Small Industries Development Bank of India and Reserve Bank of India.
Mr.Jose told the committee members that the coir industry employed six lakh people in the rural areas. He urged the Union Government to allocate more funds to the coir industry.
The committee heard the views and suggestions of the representatives of various associations of the small-scale industries as well as entrepreneurs and urged commercial banks to step up lending to the small-scale sector.
The committee members visited the Central Coir Research Institute in Alappuzha to take note of the research and development activities.
