THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Maldives Government is seeking facilities in Kerala for training its officials and people's representatives on local administration. Maldivies Minister for Atolls Mohammed Waheeddeen took up the matter with the Minister for Local Self-Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty when he called on Mr. Mohammedkutty here on Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Waheeddeen proposed that his country's officials could be trained at the Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA) in Thrissur. He also sought help in arranging field visits of its officials and atoll representatives to panchayats in Kerala. Mr. Mohammedkutty said that there was already a proposal for upgrading KILA into an institute catering to the SAARC countries. However, the decision on extending its training facilities had to be taken by the Central Government. The Maldives Minister and his team of officials were here on the advice of Union Minister Mani Sankar Aiyer to study decentralised administration and planning in Kerala. The team visited Karakulam panchayat and other places in the capital during the past two days. The Maldives Government is proposing to strengthen local governance in the atolls.
