DEHRA DUN: The Tehri Hydro Electric Project began generating 250 MW of electricity and supplied it to the Northern Grid on Monday signalling synchronisation of one of its four 250-MW conventional turbine- generating units. The project is to be formally inaugurated by the Union Power Minister later this month. Announcing this here on Tuesday, an official spokesman said all four units would be functional by December, leading to generation of 1000 MW of power. The Tehri Dam and Hydro Power Plant Stage I comprises a 260.5- m rock fill dam with a 1000 MW underground power house having four conventional turbine generator sets of 250 MW each. It is located on the Bhagirathi, about 1.5 km downstream of the confluence of the Bhagirathi and the Bhilangana in the Tehri district. Besides meeting part of the power demand, the project will provide irrigation to an additional 2.7 lakh hectares of land in Uttar Pradesh and stabilise irrigation in the existing 6.04 lakh hectares in that State. It will also provide 162 million gallons per day (300 cusecs) drinking water supply to Delhi and 108 million gallons per day (200 cusecs) drinking water to various towns of U.P.
