TIRUNELVELI: What are the things one can find in a police patrol vehicle? Batons, communication gadgets, arms and ammunitions... You have to add one more in this list - a first-aid box - if you search the police patrol vehicles that zoom across twin towns of Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai. "When we decided to introduce patrol vehicles, each with four or five armed personnel to strengthen security, we resolved to provide first-aid boxes to save accident victims. After arresting bleeding within the `golden hours,' the victims would be rushed to nearby hospitals. So we roped in a Vannarpet-based hospital. Hopefully, we can now save you from hazards of all sorts," said the Police Commissioner, Braj Kishore Ravi, after handing over the first-aid boxes to the patrol vehicles on Tuesday. Seventy policemen have been trained in giving first-aid to accident victims. He started his spadework on streamlining the chaotic traffic system within the city limits when he announced that a team would come to Tirunelveli on Wednesday to repair and operate the defunct traffic signals and instal more traffic signals in the places wherever they were needed. "All traffic signals would be provided with timers, which would further facilitate smooth movement of vehicles," a police inspector said. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), N. Bhaskaran, and other top police officials participated.
