KOREM (KARIMNAGAR Dt): This tiny village, which was in the news five years ago because of the CPI(ML) Janashakti group naxalites abducting former Union Minister Ch. Vidyasagar Rao's close relative, Ch. Marthanda Rao, from here for ransom, has also set a milestone for electing the sarpanch unanimously since independence. The gram panchayat of this village in Boinpally mandal, some 35 km from the district headquarters, was constituted in 1956. Since then, all the sarpanches were elected unanimously till date. In this election too the villagers are planning to do the same and set a record.
Record term
In the first gram panchayat election in 1957, Chennadi Hanumantha Rao was elected sarpanch unanimously. Since then, he continued as sarpanch for a record 30 years till 1987. Again in the 1987 and 1995 elections, his son Chennadi Sudhakar Rao was elected sarpanch unanimously. In the 1995 elections, the sarpanch seat was reserved for BC women and the villagers elected M. Laxmi as sarpanch unanimously. Again in the 2001, Chennadi Sudhakar Rao was elected unanimously. In this election, the seat is reserved for SC women and the villagers are planning to elect their sarpanch unanimously. Villagers proudly say that they will decide the candidate by conducting a meeting with all the village elders. "We have everything in the village. Good roads, drinking water, schools, hospital, bus service. We all participate in the temple fairs together,'' the villagers say. We will abide by the village elders' decision in electing a candidate unanimously," they maintained.
