Clashes: 22 TDP activists held

Correspondent

VIZIANAGARAM: Twenty-two TDP activists were arrested on Tuesday following clashes between Congress and TDP supporters at Gollalapeta, Garudabilli and Nelivada villages in Bondapalli mandal.

In all, 18 persons were injured, two of them seriously, in the clashes reported since Sunday night, said Bondapalli Sub-Inspector K. Rama Rao.

TDP cadres attacked Congress workers with sticks near Gollalapeta on Monday night. The condition of one Muddada Ramu, one among the eight injured in the attack, was stated to be serious.

He was admitted to government hospital at Gajapathinagaram.

Political rivalry was the reason for the clashes, said the SI.

Prohibitory orders

In Ramabhadrapuram, the mandal headquarters village, prohibitory orders were clamped under Section 144 following recurring clashes between groups led by Congress leaders Chokkapu K. Lakshmana Rao and Chintala Ramakrishna.

Sub-Inspector Raghu Srinivas said that 70 persons involved in the clashes were arrested during the last 20 days.
