Kakinada: Strict enforcement of traffic rules coupled with educating road users on safety measures and creating right conditions on the road would alone help bring down the number of accidents, said Joint Collector C. Sudarsan Reddy here on Tuesday. Presiding over the valedictory function of the week long SAFAR programme, he said every effort should be made to create awareness among various sections of people, including students, vehicle drivers and pedestrians, through placards, banners and cine slides on safety aspects. Despite making it statutory, he said only 20 per cent of motorists were using helmet. He also suggested that there be coordination among engineering departments to improve road conditions. C. Hanumantha Rao, Superintendent of Government General Hospital, participating as guest of honour, said that awareness about traffic rules should be created among students at a tender age. Deputy Transport Commissioner Y. Jaya Kumar Reddy, and others spoke. He said that during the weeklong programme, awareness programmes were conducted for different sections. Special health check-up camps were conducted for drivers.
