Women corporators stage dharna

Special Correspondent

MANGALORE: The two power centres in the Mangalore City Corporation are facing a crisis. The Mayor's post which falls vacant on July 24, 2006 is now in court and the Commissioner's post hangs in balance among three aspirants. Nine women corporators of the corporation staged a dharna in front of the Gandhi statue on M.G. Road in Bangalore on Tuesday demanding that the Government withdraw the decision to change the reservation.

Former Mayor Hilda Alva and senior Congress corporator Vijaya Arun led the dharna.

They originally intended to disrupt the Assembly proceedings by going into the assembly hall of the Vidhana Soudha. However, they were asked to hold their protest on M.G. Road, a woman corporator said. The row over the Mayor's post appears to be continuing despite Congress leader B. Janardhana Poojary's promise that the Congress would field a woman candidate for the post, while the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) is trying to change the reservation.
